localized gps

helps privacy, bandwidth efficiency, speed, accuracy

instead of GPS, a local network of mobile computers or base stations could act as nodes for triangulation of whoever connects with the service. only one gps-enabled networked device is needed to provide a point of reference. otherwise base stations will be able to give you a map of the local area and 3 of them can track your movement the same way cell phones can.

example: a convention show with nodes all over to provide access to internet and intranet as well as location-based services (augmented reality overlays). when you walk up to a booth, you’ll see on your PDA which booth it is and be able to download additional information or electronic swag from that booth.

could be used for city-wide networks to provide residents with info on buildings, restaurants, and other places. could also be used for gaming, such as neighborhood pac-man or whatever.

rushed thought, so live with the lower case and unrefined grammar/presentation.

(11/9/06) For the record, I later found a project working on this exact concept. Fuck yes PlaceLab. Fuck yes.
