Humane hardware interfacing

Friday, April 29th, 2005

Electric plugs need to be hermaphroditic. This means that no matter which end of the cord your plugging into the wall (or another cord), it will always fit. There’s no reason why this can’t happen–there is no specific way a current needs to flow on a wire since it’s just wire. There’s always at least a positive and a negative wire in the cord, sometimes (and this is probably a good thing to always have) a ground wire.

I’m just sick of all the materials we’re wasting on cords and extensions and converters. Why do we shoot ourselves in the foot so often? It’s fucking ridiculous.

Gov. intel overhaul

Friday, April 29th, 2005

Intelligence gathering needs an overhaul, and by that I don’t mean a new useless Overseer position, but rather the deletion of redundancy. There are fifteen intelligence agencies, but all we need is three: Foreign, Domestic, and Military. They should be allowed to communicate with each other easily, this way Foriegn Intel can catch wind of a terrorist (you like that word, don’t ya) with a plan, and if he gets on our soil, can pass all the info on him to Domestic Intel, who will then deal with it using Foreign Intel’s help. Foriegn and Military can obviously benefit immensely from this cooperation, sizing up the enemy and watching him while he sleeps, and if he makes a move, strike faster than he knew was possible.

I really want to know what the NSA is up to and why it’s taking such a huge chunk out of the DoD’s budget. What does it bring to the table that no other agency can or does? So here’s what they say: “It coordinates, directs, and performs highly specialized activities to protect U.S. information systems and produce foreign intelligence information. A high technology organization, NSA is on the frontiers of communications and data processing. It is also one of the most important centers of foreign language analysis and research within the government.” By that they mean building shit like Echelon and other Black Projects. Dirty bastards indeed.

Genetic design

Saturday, April 23rd, 2005

I’ve mentioned this a few times before, but it needs it’s own little post because I can’t emphasis its importance enough. “Learning about the natural world is one thing, learning from the natural world is another.”

“The concept behind genetic design, or genetic algorithm creation is simple: Brainstorm a lot of ideas, test for the good ones, then repeat using the good ones as a starting point. Eventually, if you have defined your problem’s constraints well, you end up with a solution that can be very novel and effective. [...]

“Because of the need for well articulated constraints, this method works perfectly for very complex, multi-variable, but well defined problems, like antenna design, airfoil optimization, circuit layout, object packing, and Image analysis. It’s even finding use in Formula 1 racing, and in 3d animated characters. This video of an evolving character is almost too funny for words, but it demonstrates the power of the system.” It’s really not that funny, at all in fact, but a good demonstration nonetheless.
